Soccer

There has been a whole galaxy of stars who have already donned the famed blue soccer jersey here in St. Joseph’s. Claire Scanlon, ex-international player and professional coach in America, and Stephen McPhail, formerly of Leeds and Republic of Ireland, are but two names who after their apprentice playing days here in Rush have found success on the world stage. This year Ms. Kelly and Paul Keogh (FAI Youth Development Officer) will be hoping their U-14 girls team can emulate the stars of yesteryear in upcoming soccer fixtures by playing ‘the beautiful game’ the St. Joseph’s way.

Under 14s Girls’ Soccer
This year there was a good interest shown in the uptake of Girls’ Soccer among the First Year girls. First and Second Years began training for the 2010/2011 season in early September with Ms Kelly, assisted by Third Year student Edel Doherty, an accomplished footballer for the school.
The first goal was an FAI indoor Futsal tournament, run by Development Officers Paul Keogh and Mick Pender. The girls trained every week in the build up to the event. This paid of as in the first round of the tournament they came second in their group qualifying or the second round of the tournament. This took place four weeks later and despite beating two teams in their group of four, they were narrowly defeated in a Penalty Shoot Out at the end of the day.
The girls are currently training and in preparation for the outdoor football league U14 beginning in February. Good Luck girls!
