A Week of Culture and Connection: TY German Exchange 2026
Recently we welcomed some visitors. Our Transition Year German students finally met their peers from Gelsenkirchen, Germany. After months of digital introductions and "getting to know you" sessions over Zoom, 28 German students arrived in Dublin for an unforgettable exchange from February 23rd to 26th.

The week was designed to be more than just a language lesson; it was a deep dive into friendship, cultural heritage, and the practical magic of using a second language in the real world.

The exchange kicked off with high energy at Bridge to College in Trinity College Dublin. Students participated in interactive workshops that broke the ice and got everyone collaborating.

To ground the visit in Irish history, the group also visited the Book of Kells and the Old Library. Seeing our visitors marvel at the 9th-century manuscript reminded us all of the rich history we have right on our doorstep.

On Tuesday, the focus shifted from the classroom to the sports field. Under the expert (and very patient!) guidance of Mr. Hiraldo, the Gelsenkirchen students were introduced to the "clash of the ash."

One of the most talked-about moments of the week occurred during a special breakfast hosted in St. Joseph’s. The students were treated to an incredible Bird of Prey demonstration. Having a hawk or owl perch on your arm is certainly one way to get students talking—in both German and English!

The adventure continued with:

As the week drew to a close, it was clear that the exchange had achieved its goal. Our TY students didn't just practice their German; they gained the confidence to navigate cultural differences and built genuine bonds with their German counterparts.
The laughter shared over a missed lift in hurling or a confusing illusion in the city did more for their language skills than any textbook ever could. We look forward to seeing these friendships continue to grow across the miles!
