Student Voice

Student Voice at St Joseph’s

Research tells us that if we encourage student voice it:

◦Encourages student engagement in learning

◦Enhances student agency and student leadership

◦Improves student-teacher relationships

◦Offers a unique perspective on being a student

◦Encourages active, democratic citizenship

◦Empowers students to participate in school life

(Dr Paula Flynn, 2014)

At St Joseph’s secondary School, we are proud to foster a culture of listening and inclusion through two key student-led initiatives: the Student Council and the Student Voice Forum.

The Student Council is a democratically elected body of students who represent their peers and raise issues of importance to the wider student body. This group plays a vital role in shaping school life and ensuring student perspectives are heard at all levels.

Alongside this, the Student Voice Forum consists of a randomly selected group of students from each class across all year groups. Meeting regularly throughout the year, this forum enhances the authentic student voice within the school community. Topics discussed include:

  • Teaching and learning styles

  • Use of technology in the classroom

  • Inclusive education

  • School infrastructure and resources

  • Peer collaboration

  • Educational policies and advocacy

  • Environmental education

(This list is not exhaustive.)

Together, these structures offer a genuine platform for every student to express their thoughts and opinions. This inclusive framework recognises that strong teacher–student relationships and open communication are central to effective learning. At St Joseph’s secondary school, we believe that feedback is a gift—from students, teachers, or leaders—and is essential for continuous improvement and growth.
